Greener Orkney is a key member of the Scottish Islands Federation (SIF) Beach litter working group. Last winter there was a data gathering exercise where seven beach cleans were carried out in Orkney and the products collected sampled. The data identified the types of items and these were incorporated in the full survey from 20 Scottish Islands.
The results shows that the Scottish Islands all have more than half of their beach litter (64%) from fishing compared to only 10% for the Scottish mainland beaches.
