Supporting other community-led beach cleans in Orkney
As well as beach cleans delivered directly by Greener Orkney, we are keen to encourage and promote other groups within the communities of Orkney to undertake beach cleans of their own.
If you have a regular beach clean activity and want to share details of how people can get involved, we can add your details to this page. Drop us a line!
If you want advice on setting up a regular beach clean of your own then get in touch with us. We can also lend out litter pickers and bin-bag hoops to help you run a beach clean of your own. Data gathering can be very helpful, and if you want to do more than just picking up beach litter, you can use this form to classify the waste you have collected and send the results to the Scottish Islands Federation.
Any items which could have originated from a salmon farm can be reported through this link – reports will be followed up and cleanup action taken where appropriate.

Stromness Beach Cleaners
- Information from Stromness Beach Cleaners: “A group of volunteers have been undertaking regular beach cleans at Warebeth since late 2022. Over that time, 10 volunteers have been involved at different times, with additional helpers for events such as Bag the Bruck, when we have partnered with the Species on the Edge project for an extra beach clean. Currently we have a core group of 6 – 8 regular beach cleaners and in 2025 we undertook 11 beach cleans, collecting 267.25kg of rubbish. We hope to undertake more beach cleans at Warebeth and perhaps other beaches in Stromness in 2026, if the weather allows! If you’re interested in joining us on beach cleans around Stromness, or just want to find out more, please contact Jeanie by email“
Borrow our beach cleaning equipment
We have a stock of litter pickers and bin bag hoops that can be used for beach cleans or even ‘inland’ litter picks. They are normally kept at the Stromness Community Fridge on Victoria Street but we might be able to transport them somewhere else with enough notice. We’ll need to give you a quick Health & Safety and Risk Assessment briefing before we let you loose (but it’s nothing complicated). Afterwards, we would like to know for our records how much litter you picked.
If you would like to borrow them for a cleaning event of your own, please fill out this form and we’ll see what we can do to help.
